MINDFUL MOMENT
2004 06 06 - Making a Difference - Everyday

This past week was a very interesting one for me! I had two separate speaking engagements. The first was as the closing speaker at an educational program for a group of palliative care workers. Secondly, I was a speaker at the national convention of the Funeral Service Association of Canada. I certainly don't think that it was a coincidence that I spoke to both groups in the same week.

I started each presentation by asking both groups why they have chosen to work with people who are at the end of their earthly lives. The answer was unanimous. They told me that they do it because it makes a tremendous difference in people's lives!

I know exactly what they mean. When I speak to groups and challenge them to face their own mortality I often get some very strong reactions. There are always a few people who aren't ready to think about that subject. Others, like many of the folks from this week's presentations, approach me afterwards to tell me how positively my message has affected them. It's very humbling to be able to reach people with your message! For me, this is especially true, since my message is so deeply personal.

But too often we forget that each and every one of us can make a difference on a daily basis. Think of all the lives you'll touch this week: family, friends, co-workers, clients, neighbors, store clerks, the people with whom you share the road, even your pet(s). Each time we interact with someone, we have an opportunity to make a difference.

It's not just the palliative care workers and the funeral service professionals that have an opportunity to make a difference. We all can - whether we are a massage therapist, realtor, office worker, accountant, retail employee, or truck driver we can all make a difference each and every day.

The secret is that we need to remain mindful of our thoughts, words and actions on a daily basis, for that is how we all make a difference!

ENJOY NOW!

Have you discovered yet how some angels, like the ones who heal with their smile, who help light the way for others, and in whose path the flowers sway, are actually disguised as people?

And have you also noticed that some of them, don't even know they're angels?

Psssssst, looked into a mirror lately?
